Project goals
The primary goal was to resurface and restore the historic Owosso Speedway to race-ready condition while preserving its unique banking and character. The asphalt was approximately 3.5 inches thick, and the track featured progressively banked turns at 12%, 16%, and 20% to allow for competitive three-wide racing.
The project needed to be completed during a narrow fall window, just after the final 2022 race and before local asphalt plants shut down for the season. Missing this timeframe would have delayed the reopening of the track for the 2023 race season. This project marked the first full resurfacing effort at Owosso Speedway in over three decades.
Our approach
Following the conclusion of the 2022 race season, Michigan Paving and Materials and Kalin Construction mobilized quickly. Our team began with LiDAR technology to scan and document the current surface geometry. Kalin Construction then cleaned up the surface file to create an accurate model for resurfacing.
Once the surface was pulverized, it became clear that the existing grade was not suitable for paving. After consulting with the track owner, we decided to stabilize the base layer to a depth of 16 inches using a cement-based stabilization method, working in collaboration with Wadel Construction.
With the subgrade stabilized, crews refined the final grade to meet the required specifications. The track was then paved in two 2-inch asphalt lifts using 4EO30, a high-performance mix also used for automotive test tracks by Ford and GM.
