Project goals
The goal of this initiative was to completely rebuild a deteriorating 50-year-old stretch of I-69, heavily traveled by over 90,000 vehicles daily. Originally slated as a decade-long, four-phase project, MDOT sought a more efficient approach that could reduce disruption while delivering long-term durability.
Our approach
Michigan Paving & Materials (MPM) partnered directly with MDOT to take a proactive role in both the design and engineering phases—running them concurrently with construction to accelerate the timeline. This design-build synergy enabled MPM to compress the work into a single multi-year program rather than spread it out over 10 years.
To support continuous progress, MPM utilized three nearby asphalt plants—each within 30 miles of the job site—and set up a portable concrete crushing plant to recycle removed pavement into reusable aggregate. These steps reduced hauling time, minimized material costs, and improved efficiency.
